ANOINTING OF THE SICK
This Sacrament is the anointing of the sick with holy oil, accompanied with prayer. It is also administered in situation of dangerous illness and in preparation for death, comforts the soul, remits and restores health if God sees this to be expedient. Hence, by the sacred Anointing of the Sick and the prayer of the priests the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them. And indeed she exhorts them to contribute to the good of the people of God by freely uniting themselves to the passion and death of Christ (C/f CCC 1499). Consequently, the anointing of the sick, by which the Church commends to the suffering and glorified Lord the faithful who are dangerously ill so that he may support and save them, is conferred by anointing them with oil and pronouncing the words prescribed in the liturgical books.
It is also pertinent to note that, the sacrament of Anointing of the sick has as its purpose the conferral of a special grace on the Christian experiencing the difficulties inherent in the condition of grave illness or old age (C/f CCC 1527).
